New Hampshire 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb

NHSC > Participate > FAQ For Participants

Arrival:
Please plan to arrive at the climb site between no later than 7:00 and report directly to your assigned team captain. The stair climb will begin at the conclusion of “Amazing Grace” which will be played by a local pipes and drums band at 9:02 am.  Parking will be free on the day of the climb and to the rear of 1000 Elm Street in the attached parking garage.

Check In:
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT:  When you arrive at the building, locate your team number in the staging area.  You can stage all your equipment and belongings there.  WHEN YOUR ENTIRE TEAM IS PRESENT, your team leader should check in your team at the registration desk.  The team leader will be given the teams T-shirt’s and lanyards with pictures of the lost FDNY firefighters to wear during the climb.

Waivers:
Once you have registered to participate in the stair climb, be sure to download and complete the “Waiver of Liability / Covenant Not To Sue” form from the web site.  These release forms must be presented to the registration staff at the time of check-in.  YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLIMB WITHOUT A COMPLETED WAIVER. Click here for waiver form.

Stair Climb Attire:
Participants are encouraged to climb the stairs in turn-out gear, SCBA and carrying either folded lengths of hose and/or hand tools. You may also choose the make the climb in partial PPE or SCBA, station uniform or fire department work-out clothes. The idea is to simulate conditions encountered by FDNY members who responded to the Trade Center. Remember…THIS IS NOT A RACE. So climb at your own pace and use the time to reflect and remember those lost on September 11th.

Team Assignments:
Participants will be grouped into teams of 4 to 7 members.  We will do our best to accommodate all requests for pairings.  Team integrity is vitally important for this event.  You will need to check in to accountability as a team, climb as a team, and ride the freight elevator back down all together as a team.  Each team will be assigned a team leader/officer.  This will be done without consideration for rank or title.  A list of team assignments has been posted. Click here for the climb teams.

How the climb will work:
We will be climbing the Brady Sullivan Plaza building five (5) times.  Each team will be called to “Accountability” where the Team Leader will check in with the Accountability Officer, stating that all members of their team are present and ready to climb.  Keep in mind that you may have to wait awhile before starting your climb.  We ask that you are patient as you wait and use the time to reflect on the sacrifice the fallen FDNY firefighters made and to get to know other firefighters from around the State and region.

After arriving at the top (roof) each time, your team will then descend the stairs back down to the 20th floor, and ride the freight elevator back down to the basement.  The accountability Officer will be staged in the basement at the entrance to the stairwell and it is imperative that each Team Leader checks in with him after each lap.  On the fifth and final lap, you will complete the climb on the roof where you will have the opportunity to have a Team picture taken.

Restrooms:
There will be three port-a-potties in the garage area of the building.  Please do not use any of the buildings’ facilities.

Water:
We will be providing water before, during and after the climb.  Please bring water with you as a back-up.

Family/Guests:
Family and friends are welcome to come to the climb site and take part in the opening ceremonies and observe the firefighters and other participants staged in the staging area.

After Climb Gathering:
Meet up at Jillian's in Manchester after the Stair Climb Memorial to relax and take a well-deserved break with everyone! Jillian's will be offering a discount on drinks and appetizers for all the event participants and volunteers. Doors will open at 12 noon.
